Men, whether we plan on being pastors, missionaries, music ministers, or ministers in the secular workforce, we all have the calling to be ministers of the Gospel. Even if we do not feel a calling to any sort of regular teaching of Scripture to a congregation or Sunday school, every one of us should be able to open up a text of Scripture to a group of people who need to hear it. At the Beehive, we all have an incredible opportunity to show the love of Christ, to gain comfort in teaching Scripture, and to share God’s word with a group of people who, for the most part, have no other way of hearing the Bible taught.

The Beehive is an assisted living facility on the east side of Louisville in the Lyndon area. Every Monday evening, from 6:15-7:00, the glory of God and the love of Christ are shown to the fourteen residents and two staff members through fellowship and the teaching of Scripture. Each week, we try to spend a few minutes chatting with the residents and staff before we open the text to see how their week has been since the last time we saw them. Then, the teacher takes fifteen to thirty minutes to teach the greatness of Christ in their text. Finally, we pray and spend a few more minutes discussing the text and talking with the residents. It is a very informal and flexible time.

Wives and children are encouraged to accompany their husbands. The Beehive is made up of mostly female residents, and their faces light up at the chance to see children. If you have any musical gifts, please feel free to bring along an instrument and prepare a song or two for worship. The residents enjoy singing along or listening to Christian music.

In the midst of our busy lives with family, work, school, and numerous other responsibilities, we have a chance to take a break and serve some people in our community. Let’s not neglect to make some time to show the greatness of our Savior!
